The Lucian Draft “Secrets” Everyone Pretends Aren’t the Reason They’re Losing
Lucian is one of those champs that people love to call “average” because the overall win rate hovers around 50%… and then they immediately lock him blind into the worst possible lane like it’s a personality trait.
Meanwhile, the Lucian players who draft like they have eyes (and build like they’re not possessed by the ghost of “Berserker’s Greaves Every Game”) suddenly look like they’re smurfing. Same champ. Same buttons. Totally different results.
So if you’ve ever had a Lucian game where you thought, “I swear I’m playing fine, why does this feel impossible?” welcome. This is the part where we talk about what actually decides your lane before minions even spawn: matchups, support pairings, and timing.
First: Lucian isn’t weak. He’s picky. (Like me with paint undertones.)
Lucian’s whole deal is: win lane, get tempo, take objectives, end the game before the enemy hypercarry finishes their cozy 3 item bedtime routine.
If the game goes 35 minutes and the enemy Jinx is free firing from a different zip code? That’s not “unlucky.” That’s the Lucian timer going ding.
So the question isn’t “Is Lucian good?”
It’s “Is Lucian good here… with this support… into that lane?”
The matchups that will make you feel like a main character… or a cautionary tale
I’m not going to throw a million percentages at you, but here’s the vibe from Emerald+ matchup data:
The “please don’t do this to yourself” counters
If you lock Lucian into these and then act surprised, I will gently bonk you with a pool noodle:
- Swain: root interrupts your dash, he heals through your burst, and teamfights become his little horror movie.
- Yasuo: Wind Wall deletes your stuff like it’s clearing clutter from a countertop. (Your Q, your W, your ult… gone. Poof.)
- Nilah: she loves all-ins, heals like a menace, and your “burst window” turns into “why is she still at 80% HP?”
Also: Caitlyn deserves a special warning label. You can win with good support/jungle help, sure, but her range + traps can make you feel like you’re trying to start a fight while standing outside the club.
The “death by a thousand annoying things” matchups
These aren’t always insta loss, but they stack irritation fast:
- Ashe: perma slowed Lucian is just… a guy. A normal guy with two guns.
- Miss Fortune: her slow zone + ult punishes your short range hard.
- Jinx / Kog’Maw: if they survive lane, they outscale you and you can practically hear the late game music start playing.
And then there’s Draven the classic “he has 700 extra gold at 15 minutes and you’re suddenly working a second job.” If you’re into Draven, you often need jungle attention or you need to play the lane like a saint. (I am not a saint. Maybe you are.)
Where Lucian actually gets to be Lucian
This is your happy place:
- Varus, Kalista, Zeri, Ezreal, Samira
The pattern is simple: either they’re immobile, slow to come online, or their early lane is snack sized for Lucian’s level 2 pressure. If you see one of these in champ select, your next question should be:
Do I have the support that lets me press the gas without exploding?
Your support pick changes EVERYTHING (and yes, it’s unfair)
I’ve seen this so many times: someone locks Lucian early, their support hovers something sleepy and stationary, and suddenly Lucian’s lane bully fantasy turns into “farm under tower and pray.”
Lucian wants either:
- an enchanter who helps him go in, or
- a tank who makes trades not optional.
Supports that make Lucian feel illegal
- Milio: shield + healing + safety so you can actually take short range trades without evaporating.
- Braum: your double shots stack his passive like crazy = stuns for days.
- Nami: speeds you up, sets you up, keeps your damage pattern rolling (and yes, the synergy is real).
Supports that often make me sigh deeply
- Soraka / Sona style lanes can work, but if the enemy lane is aggressive, it’s like bringing a scented candle to a knife fight.
Enemy supports that ruin your day
- Nautilus: hook interrupts your dash and your ult dreams.
- Leona: chain CC, goodnight.
- Morgana: Black Shield turns your pressure into interpretive dance.
If your support hasn’t picked yet and you’re thinking of locking Lucian?
Just understand you’re not locking a champ you’re making a bet.
Bot vs Mid: where I actually like him
Bot lane (default)
This is still Lucian’s home. Your best games are the ones where you win lane, rotate first, take dragons, and the enemy never gets to breathe.
Mid lane (situational, spicy)
Lucian mid can be great into control mages who want to stand there and do taxes:
- Orianna, Viktor, Syndra types
But I avoid it into mid laners with reliable “nope” buttons:
- Lissandra, Twisted Fate, Annie
Also mid Lucian loves to push. Which is fun until the enemy has strong gank setup and you’re suddenly donating a shutdown like it’s charity week.
If you don’t have a clear reason to go mid, just go bot.
The build that actually performs (aka: stop auto piloting)
Here’s the core path that consistently shows up as a top performer:
Essence Reaver → Ionian Boots of Lucidity → Infinity Edge → Navori Flickerblade → Lord Dominik’s Regards
Yes, Ionian boots. I know. Berserker’s feels like the default because we’ve all been trained like little shopkeeper pigeons to buy skin color variants. But the ability haste from Ionians makes Lucian’s whole kit cycle smoother especially your dash timing and resets.
If you take one thing from this post: try Ionians and see how much less “one dash and panic” your fights feel.
Small timing note: Lucian loves an early Essence Reaver spike. If you can finish it around the 12 minute mark, you’re hitting when you’re supposed to. If it’s showing up at 14+ minutes, you’re often missing your best window.
Runes I keep coming back to
- Press the Attack
- Presence of Mind
- Legend: Bloodline
Secondary:
- Biscuit Delivery
- Magical Footwear
Skill order (keep it simple)
Max Q, then E, then W.
The power spikes you should be playing like you mean it
1) Level 2: the classic Lucian “hello, goodbye”
Hit level 2 first (first wave + 3 melees from wave two) and you’ve got two abilities while they’re still shopping for their second one.
If your lane matchup is one of the juicy ones (Varus/Ezreal/Zeri etc.), this is where you start building the lead that decides the whole game.
2) Level 6: The Culling isn’t just for “poke”
Your ult is real pressure. It forces flashes, forces bad recalls, and turns low HP targets into regret.
Bonus: you can move while channeling, which is honestly one of the reasons it doesn’t feel as tragic as some other ADC ults.
3) Two items: this is your takeover window
Lucian is not a “wait for three items and pray” champ. At two items, you start feeling like your dash is actually part of your kit and not a once per fight family heirloom.
4) The falloff (the timer I warned you about)
Around 28-30 minutes, the true late game monsters start doing monster things (Jinx, Kog’Maw, Caitlyn, etc.). That doesn’t mean you’re useless just that you need to have built an advantage earlier, or you’re fighting uphill in flip flops.
My quick “should I lock Lucian?” checklist
Pick Lucian when…
- The enemy bot lane is something you can actually pressure (short range, weak early, slow to scale)
- Your support is Milio/Braum/Nami (or another pairing you know works for you)
- Your team has at least a little frontline so you’re not the designated sacrifice
- Your comp wants to scrap early and take dragons/towers fast
I avoid Lucian when…
- I see Swain/Yasuo/Nilah and I value my mental health
- Enemy support is heavy lockdown (Naut/Leona/Morg) and my support isn’t ready to brawl
- Our team is four scaling squishies and a dream
- It’s looking like a 35 minute “protect the hypercarry” kind of game
The fastest way to get better on Lucian (without grinding 200 games)
After your next few Lucian games, do this one thing: label your losses.
Was it:
- Draft loss (counter lane + bad support pairing + no frontline + late game comp)?
- Or execution loss (missed level 2 timing, bad dash usage, poor recalls, didn’t push tempo)?
Be brutally honest. Most people discover they’re “playing Lucian wrong” when they’re actually just locking him in the wrong situations.
Also, if you’re serious about climbing with him: find 1-2 support players who actually enjoy Milio/Braum/Nami and duo sometimes. Lucian with the right support feels like a different champion because, functionally, it is.
Now go bully lane responsibly in your tarot-themed Lucian skin. And if you blind pick Lucian into Swain/Nautilus… I can’t stop you, but I can judge you a little.
