When I was deep into battlegrounds, I found Goblin tools more reliable since the damage always landed. Gnomish gadgets could be funny and disruptive, but they sometimes backfired at the worst time.

Goblin engineering works well in PvE if you want to farm mobs quickly or add extra AoE damage to group raids.
